New Senior Consulting Curator Announced

Clyfford Still Museum Announces Dr. David Anfam as New Senior Consulting Curator

Denver, CO – May 15, 2013– The Clyfford Still Museum announced today a strategic addition to its leadership team to support museum exhibitions, scholarship and the overall vision of the museum as it expands the role of David Anfam as Senior Consulting Curator. Dr. Anfam has a long-established and distinguished international reputation as a curator and scholar of Clyfford Still’s work and is the only scholar who was allowed access into the collection by the artist’s widow following the artist’s death.

As Senior Consulting Curator, Dr. Anfam will assist the Museum in charting the vision for the Museum’s Research Center and other scholarly initiatives, enhancing the fulfillment of a key part of the Museum’s mission, as well as supporting ongoing exhibition and collection activities. Dr. Anfam will also have a significant role in the examination and understanding of the Still archives, which will form the basis for future exhibitions, publications, and initiatives by other researchers. Most recently, Dr. Anfam co-curated the museum’s inaugural exhibitions, as well as Vincent/Clyfford; and the upcoming Memory, Myth & Magic, opening May 24, 2013.

“With more than three decades as a scholar of and writer on the late artist’s work and unarguably one of the world’s leading experts on Still, Dr. Anfam has already made significant contributions to the Museum’s curatorial mission,” said Dean Sobel, Director, Clyfford Still Museum. “Dr. Anfam has deep expertise that will be essential to the Museum’s successful establishment of a Research Center and curatorial direction of future exhibitions and education about Clyfford Still and the Abstract Expressionist movement.“

Beginning in 2006, Anfam, along with other prominent museum directors and curators, served as a member of the Museum’s Advisory Committee that was established to help plan the Museum and its programs prior to the Museum’s 2011 opening. Dr. Anfam assisted the Museum’s Director in co-curating the Museum’s inaugural exhibition in 2011; the exhibition exploring the artistic relationship between Still and Vincent van Gogh that was presented in late 2012; and the above cited curatorial supervision of the upcoming Memory, Myth & Magic. Dr. Anfam also continues as Commissioning Editor for Fine Art, Phaidon Press, a position that he has held since 1997.

About The Clyfford Still Museum

The Clyfford Still Museum was founded to promote public and scholarly understanding of the late artist’s work and legacy, through the presentation and preservation of the Clyfford Still and Patricia Still estates, donated to the City of Denver in 2004 and 2005 respectively, and totaling approximately 2,800 artworks. Considered one of the most important painters of the twentieth century, Still (1904 – 1980) was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II. The Stills’ estates—now understood to contain nearly 95 percent of the artist’s total output—as well as his extensive archives, were sealed off from the public from 1980 to 2011.

The new museum is in the heart of the city’s Civic Center Cultural Complex. For more information about the Clyfford Still Museum, please visit, find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
