About this Role
The Director of Facilities & Infrastructure provides leadership across facilities operations, building systems management, safety, security, and capital projects. This position plays a vital role in aligning facilities work with the Museum’s mission, strategic priorities, and culture of excellence.
The Director oversees the Museum’s building operations, maintenance, IT infrastructure, and custodial functions to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff and visitors.
This role plays a key part in sustaining the Museum’s daily operations and long-term care by maintaining physical infrastructure, coordinating repairs, and managing vendor, and contractor relationships. In close collaboration with departments across the Museum, the Director of Facilities & Infrastructure supports the preservation of the collection and the success of exhibitions, programs, and events.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Lead long-term facilities planning and life cycle forecasting, capital improvement initiatives, continuity and sustainability practices, modernization, and efficiency initiatives across all facilities.
- Oversee vendor and contractor relationships in partnership with the COO, including procurement, negotiation, and performance evaluation.
- Develop, monitor, and manage the annual facilities budget, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
- Identify and implement cost-saving measures, efficiency improvements, and best-in-class preventive maintenance programs. Identify building grant opportunities.
Administration and Documentation Management
- Track and maintain facilities records, certifications, as-built plans, and compliance documentation.
- Lead facility inspections, testing, and documentation efforts to ensure quality and safety.
- Manage and monitor performance metrics to track infrastructure health and drive continuous improvement.
Infrastructure and Building Systems
- Oversee the daily custodial and maintenance operations of the Museum’s building and grounds.
- Monitor and maintain building systems, including HVAC, BMS, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical infrastructure, develop, coordinate and document preventative and predictable maintenance programs, repairs, and inspections for all systems.
- Ensure timely compliance with all applicable building and regulatory codes, regulations, and institutional policies.
- Serve as primary contact for after-hours building emergencies.
Construction and Capital Projects
- Oversee the planning and execution of facility renovation and upgrade projects.
- Lead the contractor selection process, ensuring quality, cost, and schedule compliance.
- Ensure timely and budget-conscious project delivery in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Security, Safety and Risk Management
- Ensures a safe environment for staff, visitors, and collections.
- Collaborate with the Collections team to maintain environmental standards in collection spaces and support the Museum’s integrated pest management program.
- In consultation with external Security contractors, establish and maintain standardized facility security protocols, including emergency response planning and testing.
- Lead implementation and ongoing maintenance of physical security systems (e.g., access control, surveillance).
Program and Event Support
- Ensure facilities readiness for exhibitions, installations, and deinstallations in coordination with the Collections team.
- Support facilities needs for public programs, private events, and rentals in collaboration with Learning & Engagement, Development & Membership, Visitor Experience, and Events teams.
Team and Culture
- Serve as a senior leader within the organization, providing facilities management support to the executive management team.
- Supervise external facilities contractors and custodial vendors.
- Foster a service-oriented, safety-conscious culture grounded in care, efficiency, and collaboration.

About You / The Ideal Candidate
Overview
The ideal candidate for this key leadership position, is a service-driven facilities leader with strong financial acumen and deep knowledge of building systems (HVAC, BMS, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and security). They are deeply committed to balancing cost efficiency with long-term asset protection, and fostering a culture where facilities work is strategic and seen as mission critical. They are skilled in documentation and policy development, create clear systems for operations, safety, preventive maintenance, and emergency response to ensure consistency and accountability.
Background Requirements
Additionally, the ideal candidate meets the following criteria:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field preferred
- Certifications such as Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or Facilities Management Professional (FMP) preferred. Spanish language preferred but not required.
Experience
- 9-12 years of experience preferred in a comparable role or organization
- 3-5 years of management experience preferred
Skills
- Building systems expertise (HVAC, BMS, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, security)
- Preventative and predictive maintenance planning and execution.
- Knowledge of codes and compliance (OSHA, ADA, NFPA life safety, fire, environmental, local building regulations)
- Contractor/vendor management (procurement, negotiation, performance oversight)
- Budgeting and financial management (capital and operating budgets, cost analysis, project value engineering, ROI on facilities investments)

Compensation Information
Department: Facilities & Infrastructure
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Deputy Director; No direct reports
Location: Fully onsite (100% in-person at CSM; no remote work)
Hours / Schedule: Standard office hours (Mon–Fri, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.) with occasional evenings and weekends required; offices are open 7 a,m,–7 p,m,
Physical Requirements:
- Moderate lifting (25-50 pounds): occasional setup of tables, chairs, exhibition items, and event equipment.
- Extended standing or frequent walking throughout the Museum spaces.
- Frequent computer and hand-eye coordination tasks (extended periods of typing, data entry, and screen use).
- Working at heights or in confined spaces (use of ladders, lifts, scaffolding, crawl spaces, or confined areas)
Classification: Full-time, exempt
Salary Range: $105,000 – $120,000 annually; commensurate with skills and experience.
