Online Classes

These classes seek to answer the question: Who was Clyfford Still? Learn from Museum staff and scholars about elements of Still’s life, his artistic inspiration, and the ongoing work of the Museum. Classes run across the course of four weeks and meet for an hour and a half for each session. Each session includes time for group conversation and personal reflection. Learn using an immersive, state-of-the-art platform that brings you closer to the work than ever before.

Clyfford Still: An Artist’s Path to Abstraction

Dates: January 7–28, 2026
Time: 6–7:30 p.m.
Cost: $200

Spend a month taking an in-depth look at the life and biography of the artist. This class charts Still’s path from his rural upbringing in Alberta, Canada through to his time as a professor, painter, and vocal critic of the art world.

Situating Still: Engagement with the Art World

Dates: March 3–24, 2026
Time: 4–5:30 p.m.
Cost: $200

Considering the transformational time between 1942 and 1955, this class traces Clyfford Still’s journey across the US, primarily between San Francisco, Richmond, and New York as he navigates the advent of the Abstract Expressionist period. Explore where Still’s work was shown (and where it wasn’t) and his relationship to his contemporaries.

The Women in Clyfford Still’s Life

Dates: May 3–24, 2026
Time: 6–7:30 p.m.
Cost: $200

Using archival materials and ongoing scholarship, this class showcases the influence of Still’s mother, his relationship to his daughters, and his first and second wives, Lilian and Patricia. Time will also be dedicated to the influential women gallery owners and curators, like Peggy Guggenheim and Betty Parsons.

Trace Clyfford Still’s evolution as an artist through his experimentation with various mediums. Explore his uses of charcoal, pastel, and his commitment to applying oil paint with a palette knife. Sessions in this class will also bring in contemporary examples of the mediums discussed.

Join this class to gain an understanding of the preservation and care of the Clyfford Still collection. Sessions will explore techniques and approaches to conservation for the paintings and works on paper in the collection, along with an exploration of archival material outlining Still’s intentions and process.
