These classes seek to answer the question: Who was Clyfford Still? Learn from Museum staff and scholars about elements of Still’s life, his artistic inspiration, and the ongoing work of the Museum. Classes run across the course of four weeks and meet for an hour and a half for each session. Each session includes time for group conversation and personal reflection. Clyfford Still: An Artist’s Path to Abstraction

Situating Still: Engagement with the Art World

Considering the transformational time between 1942 and 1955, this class traces Clyfford Still’s journey across the US, primarily between San Francisco, Richmond, and New York as he navigates the advent of the Abstract Expressionist period. The Women in Clyfford Still’s Life

Using archival materials and ongoing scholarship, this class showcases the influence of Still’s mother, his relationship to his daughters, and his first and second wives, Lilian and Patricia. Time will also be dedicated to the influential women gallery owners and curators, like Peggy Guggenheim and Betty Parsons.
