Dean Sobel, Director
Dean Sobel was appointed Director of the Clyfford Still Museum in February of 2005. A specialist in 20th – century art, Sobel spearheaded the effort to create a permanent home for the Clyfford Still and Patricia Still estates. Sobel led the process of selecting Brad Cloepfil and Allied Works Architecture as the architect for the new museum and established the vision and inaugural exhibition and public program for the new institution. From 2000 through 2005, Sobel was Director of the Aspen Art Museum, where he acted as chief management officer and artistic director for this non-collecting kunsthalle dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Prior to this appointment, from 1995 through 2000, Sobel was Chief Curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where he held the joint position of Curator of Contemporary Art. Over the course of his career, Sobel has organized over 60 exhibitions of international contemporary art, including dozens of one-artist retrospectives and projects. He is also the author of One Hour Ahead: The Avant-Garde in Aspen, 1945-2004, which was published in 2004.
Christopher W. Hunt, President, Board of Directors
President of the Board of Directors since 2005, Christopher W. Hunt has played an integral role in creating a permanent home for Clyfford Still Museum in Denver and has helped to lead the museum’s capital and endowment campaigns. Hunt is a founding partner and Chairman of Caerus Oil and Gas, LLC, a privately held energy company based in Denver, Colorado. Prior to forming Caerus Oil and Gas, Hunt was the founder and president of Knightsbridge Capital, a private investment firm located in Denver, Colorado. Prior to founding Knightsbridge Capital, Hunt served as a vice president at The Anschutz Corporation, where he provided financial, investment, and merger and acquisition services for the company’s investment portfolio and served in the Denver and 2 London, England offices. Previously, Hunt served in the private investment group of Bechtel Enterprises in San Francisco, CA. Hunt has a bachelor’s degree from Yale University (magna cum laude) and a master’s degree in business from the J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
David Anfam, Adjunct Curator
David Anfam is a writer, curator and leading authority on modern American art. He is the Senior Consulting Curator at the Clyfford Still Museum and the Director of its Research Center. His publications include Abstract Expressionism (1990), the catalogue raisonné Mark Rothko: Works on Canvas (1998), which won the Mitchell prize in 2000, as well as studies on Anish Kapoor, Edward Kienholz and Wayne Thiebaud. He continues to be a regular reviewer for The Burlington Magazine. Anfam received his BA (prima cum laude, 1976) and PhD degrees (1994) from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
