Your Visit to the Still

What should you expect from your visit?

We are the only museum dedicated to Clyfford Still (1904–1980), a renegade artist who helped create and launch Abstract Expressionism, an American movement that emerged after World War II. At the Still, visitors will find a world-class collection gifted to the City and County of Denver, award-winning architecture, cross-disciplinary programs for all ages, and opportunities to explore their own creativity. Exhibitions stimulate curiosity, arouse emotions, and explore multiple perspectives. The Still invites visitors to refresh, recharge, and reconnect with joy.

Art and Architecture

Designed specifically to display Clyfford Still’s work, the Museum is home to approximately 3,125 works, representing more than 93% of his lifetime output. The art collection consists of approximately 830 paintings and more than 2,300 works on paper and sculpture. Still specifically did not assign titles to his artworks because he wanted people to make their own interpretations of what they see, think, or feel when looking at his work. The numbers that follow the PH refer to inventory PHotograph numbers the artist assigned to each work. While exploring the galleries, look at the PH- number next to an artwork. If it has a small, yellow rectangle next to it, that means the artwork is on view for the first time.

Built to perfectly complement the scale, themes, and colors of Still’s art, the building itself is a work of art. The Clyfford Still Museum is a dense, cantilevered two-story building of richly worked concrete deriving its presence from the earth. Learn more about the building’s unique architecture by picking up an Architecture Guide brochure during your visit or learn more online.
