A Decade of Discovery: Clyfford Still in Denver exhibition kicks off Clyfford Still Museum’s tenth anniversary

Denver, CO – September 27, 2021 – The Clyfford Still Museum (CSM) will open the new exhibition, A Decade of Discovery: Clyfford Still in Denver, on October 15.  The show revisits the Museum’s inaugural exhibition and highlights some of the most compelling revelations CSM has uncovered about the collection since it opened in 2011.

In its first decade, CSM has made countless discoveries as the staff inventoried and assessed the Museum’s vast art and archival holdings, worked to better understand visitors’ interests, and evaluated the artist’s legacy in an ever-changing world. A Decade of Discovery includes photographs of lost paintings from the 1930s, undocumented and mysterious artworks found during the collection inventory process, and conservation-related breakthroughs about Still’s materials. These never-before-shown elements recontextualize familiar paintings and stories, casting Still’s art, process, and legacy in a new light.

The exhibition will feature expanded information about Still’s earliest years, supportive family, and even a few architectural quirks unearthed about the building. Exhibition text will highlight various staff, scholarly, and community voices to broaden engagement and present a wide range of perspectives.

“Keep your eye out for new and exciting interpretive elements included in the galleries for the first time during A Decade of Discovery,” said Bailey Placzek, Clyfford Still Museum associate curator & catalogue raisonné research and project manager. “The Museum will show an unprecedented number of photographs, inventory records, and correspondence uncovered in the Clyfford Still Archives alongside related artworks. We have also included new interpretive approaches designed to engage families with young children.”

The exhibition will run through March 6, 2022. Visit clyffordstillmuseum.org for more information. The Museum will offer a variety of free programs and events during the run of the exhibition. Visit clyffordstillmuseum.org/events for a schedule of upcoming programs.

A Decade of Discovery will kick off a year-long, community-centered presentation of public programs, exhibitions, and partnerships. The Museum’s tenth anniversary celebration will evolve in 2022 to articulate its goals for the next ten years.

About the Clyfford Still Museum
Designed by Allied Works Architecture to display the revolutionary art of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists, the Clyfford Still Museum opened in November 2011 in Denver’s Golden Triangle Creative District. Considered one of the most important and mysterious painters of the 20th century, Clyfford Still (1904-1980) was among the first generation of abstract expressionist artists who developed a new and powerful approach to painting in the years during and immediately after World War II. The Museum’s collection represents more than 93% of the artist’s lifetime output. As the steward of Still’s art and legacy, the Museum’s mission is to preserve, exhibit, study, and foster engagement with its unique collections; generate outstanding exhibitions, scholarly research, educational and other cross-disciplinary programs that broaden the definition of a “single-artist” museum; and be a gathering place for the exploration of innovation and individual artistic endeavor. Connect with the Clyfford Still Museum on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or at clyffordstillmuseum.org.
