Awful Bigness exhibition to close September 10 at the Clyfford Still Museum

Denver, CO – September 5, 2023 – The Clyfford Still Museum (CSM)’s exhibition Awful Bigness will close on Sunday, September 10. Organized by Bailey Placzek, CSM curator, in collaboration with Joyce Tsai, CSM director, the exhibition celebrates the big feelings and ideas inspired by Still’s immersive artworks.

According to the show’s curators, Still’s largest, most immersive paintings provoke big feelings of awe, terror, and transcendence, offering space to explore big ideas in the Museum’s galleries. Awful Bigness follows a chronological display of Still’s works in CSM’s first four galleries, which overviews Still’s 60-year career and journey toward abstraction.

The Museum will present several events during the final week of the show including an SCFD Free Day on September 6, Last Look Member Tour on September 7, Family Program: Cyanotypes (Sun Prints) on CSM’s outdoor forecourt on September 9, and Music in the Galleries with classical guitarist Nicolò Spera on September 10.

The Museum will be closed for exhibition installation from September 11–14 and will open Spotlight: Inside Collections Care and Conservation on September 15. CSM will continue to present the terrace multisensory installation Abstract Expressions on the Museum terraces.

About the Clyfford Still Museum
Designed by Allied Works Architecture to display the revolutionary art of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists, the Clyfford Still Museum opened in November 2011 in Denver’s Golden Triangle Creative District. Considered one of the most important and mysterious painters of the 20th century, Clyfford Still (1904-1980) was among the first generation of abstract expressionist artists who developed a new and powerful approach to painting in the years during and immediately after World War II. The Museum’s collection represents more than 93% of the artist’s lifetime output. As the steward of Still’s art and legacy, the Museum’s mission is to preserve, exhibit, study, and foster engagement with its unique collections; generate outstanding exhibitions, scholarly research, educational and other cross-disciplinary programs that broaden the definition of a “single-artist” museum; and be a gathering place for the exploration of innovation and individual artistic endeavor. Connect with the Clyfford Still Museum on Facebook, TwitterInstagram, TikTok, YouTube, or at  clyffordstillmuseum.org.
