Denver, CO – June 26, 2020 – After an extended closure due to COVID-19, the Clyfford Still Museum (CSM) will reopen to members on July 1 and to the public on July 7. For the safety of its visitors and staff, the Museum will reopen with substantially enhanced safety and cleaning protocols, and measures to ensure that visitors can maintain appropriate social distancing.
Persons who are feeling ill or who have been exposed to COVID-19 within the past two weeks are asked to visit at a later date. While these new protocols may require more advance planning and some inconvenience or delay, CSM is committed to making a visit to the Museum as safe as possible.
Starting on July 7, CSM will offer a daily member hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and general public hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Visitors must pre-purchase a ticket for a specific time and date online or over the phone. Tickets will not be available onsite. Online ticket sales are available now and phone ticket sales will begin on Monday, June 29. All visitors will require a ticket, including those receiving free admission, such as children ages 17 and under.
“We’re delighted to be in a position to safely reopen our entire facility and, with the reduced occupancy and enhanced safety and cleaning protocols, to provide visitors with an even more intimate experience with the artworks within our light-filled galleries,” said Dean Sobel. “We are asking each visitor to monitor their own symptoms and practice good hygiene and prevention measures to help ensure the Museum maintains a safe environment,” added Sobel.
In addition to strictly limiting the number of visitors, the Museum is also posting one-way directional guidance, installing plexi-barriers at check in, and requiring visitors ages three and older and staff to wear adequate face covering while inside the Museum. The Museum has implemented enhanced and more frequent facility cleaning measures and adopted additional safety protocols for both visitors and staff, which are included in detail on the CSM website. The website also includes policies that strive to make each visitor’s experience as safe as possible.
When the Museum reopens, it will resume the exhibition The Early Years: Clyfford Still in Canada, 1920–33 in the first three galleries. The Early Years illustrates the early development and legacy of Still’s artistic practices in two distinctive Canadian geographical settings, Bow Island (1920–25) and Killam, Alberta (1925–33). The remaining galleries will include highlights from the collection. In light of the current social issues, the Museum has also added text to a few works in the galleries that are relevant to national crises from the past to offer some new perspectives on Still’s work and provide additional points of connection and reflection.
During the temporary closure, the Clyfford Still Museum has worked diligently to continue bringing quality programs and its vast online collection virtually to audiences around the world. The Museum will continue offering free virtual programs for the rest of 2020. The Museum will also offer SCFD Free Days once a month starting in July, but tickets must also be reserved in advance. The free tickets will be available online one week prior to each SCFD Free Day.
The CSM’s hands-on art studio The Making Space will offer free “Making Space To-Go” artmaking kits for families to take home and create their own art inspired by the work of Clyfford Still.
